Still no GM update on 2G Sunsetting fix for pre-2015 OnStar vehicles?

New Contributor II

We're almost half way through 2022 and still no official GM updates on any revised OnStar "2G-Sunsetting" solution for pre-2015 GM vehicles with factory OnStar hardware (2G CDMA) (which without a GM fix, will have "N-OnStar" by the end of 2022 when the US 2G mobile data system shuts down.)

By contrast, I've already received free plug-and-play hardware upgrades for: 1.) A family member's pacemaker modem (See attached image of USB stick 2g to 4g upgrade modem; 2.) A Home alarm system 2g to 4g modem upgrade (see attached photo for the alarm's modem retrofit.)

I had Onstar since I purchased the car in 2013.  Never used it in an emergency  but to me the best features were:

notification of car status - low tire pressure, need for oil changes and keyless entry etc.  So pay $15/month to notify folks that your  phone is in a crash is stupid.  And for calling a tow truck ( 360/years) for 2 cars is not a good value proposition.  I can call AAA and pocket the difference.

As far as loved one tracking, I can use googlie find my or where's my droid.  So tell my why 15$/month?

Completely agree. Especially for iPhone owners, there just isn't value in Guardian, especially when so many car insurance companies are offering similar features without the fee. And oh by the way, Guardian is actually USING a car insurance company for some of the services offered in the app (it's buried in the fine print someplace.) I'd much rather have the integrated solution.

Another member of this community started a petition on requesting GM/OnStar revisit their decision. I'm certain you could find the link elsewhere in this thread, or a related thread under this topic.

Recently purchased my vehical, I was NEVER informed that I would be loosing onstar or I would have made a different purchase! Now I decided to trade in my vehicle for one that will get the onstar services i use only to find out that my car has lost significant value due to the 2g shut down. I was only offered half of my car value for trade in. I went to 3 different dealers thinking something was wrong with first guys quote .nope my car now is valued at half of what I still owe. Thanks gm for absolutely ripping me of. An um a onstar app for 15 a month for what??? O I can share it with 7 people yea ! So 7 more people have a worthless app! No thank you!!! An so disappointed I'm stuck with a car I have to continue paying on that isn't worth what owed!!

OUCH! I've been considering trading in my 2013 and thought the trade-in value they were offering was a little low...

I hear they are introducing a budget alternative to Guardian. For $2 month they will send you a white cloth marked " ONSTAR 2G VICTIM" . If you are in trouble you can wave it out the window and anyone using WaZe can see you, understand your issue and call for help.

And so on Thanksgiving Day, after enjoying a fabulous meal at my daughter's house, I used the myCadillac app on my phone to remote start my car and warm it up before braving the elements and the cold -- or so I thought I would. My Remote Start button was gone from my app. Fearing the worst, I went out and got into my car and saw that the OnStar light was dark. Yes, that's right, GM sent me a Thanksgiving present and while I was eating dinner and giving thanks, they disconnected my OnStar on my 2012 Cadillac.

I knew it was coming and yet just the same I was pissed off. On Thanksgiving Day GM? Way to rub salt into the wound! Here's the funny thing (well, maybe one day it will seem funny). I pushed my OnStar button out of frustration and anger (and may have even used my middle finger to push it) and imagine my shock when I hear the OnStar voice advising me to push it again if I wanted to connect my car to the OnStar service (or something to that effect). Now intrigued, because apparently I still had 2G CDMA service since my car was able to remotely figure out that it had been disconnected, I pushed the OnStar button again and found myself connected to and speaking with an OnStar advisor!

I explained to the nice person on the other end that the reason for my call was that I was confused about the situation. I had just entered my vehicle and found my OnStar service disconnected, yet here I was using the 2G CDMA OnStar network to speak with her. She politely asked me to hold on while she looked up my account details (apparently she could still get her system to find me) and verified that this was regarding the 2012 Cadillac. She then asked if I was aware that GM was being forced to switch the owners of older their Guardian App. I said I was and that it was my understanding that it would happen in DECEMBER 2022, not on Thanksgiving Day in NOVEMBER.

She apologized and said that GM has already been rolling out the disconnections. I asked how it was that she and I were able to still talk through the OnStar button. I mean obviously, 2G CDMA hadn't disappeared yet. She said that the ability to speak to an OnStar Advisor was the last thing that GM would disconnect -- on December 31, 2022.

As we ended the call, she asked if there was anything else she could help me with -- and I replied "Besides saying goodbye to an estimated 1.5 million OnStar customers and their revenue? Yeah, tell me when GM is going to offer a hardware solution that I can purchase to upgrade my 2G CDMA OnStar module to a 4G LTE version." Of course, there was no solution to offer. Happy Thanksgiving GM.

P.S. Here's a petition that I encourage you to sign if that pissed you off as well (takes less than 4 minutes) --

I would love to know when GM decided to forgo the original premise of OnStar being satellite based? I've asked the question and nobody has provided an answer. The whole point of OnStar when it launched was that it would work no matter where you were, it was not reliant on cell service which is still spotty in rural areas.  My car is only 8 years old and runs great, why should I have to get a new one just to get OnStar to work. They are pouring 5g modules in new cars, there is no reason they cannot retrofit older vehicles. They are being lazy and trifling. What a crock. Ar least some of you were offered dangles, I wasn't even off we red that courtesy. My entire family has only ever purchased GM vehicles. Both my father and sister worked for GM., it is infuriating that GM had taken this stance for millions of customers.  Not to mention they are charging new customers a premium for OnStar whether they choose to use it or not.  All part of their billion dollar idea to print money for nothing.

Even this damn website hardly works! The piece of shit app won't let sign in on my iPhone - button will not work - thought Id try a Guardian app trial thinking I would try the diagnostics, remote start, etc- the last time I used it I was cool to use on my 2014 enclave. This was back in Feburary 22. I read they were working on the 2G issue so I didn't worry about it too much. Now I find my self on their forum seriously pissed off. No more connection!!!??? @#$@#$R!$@# YOU GM! Class action is the answer. They could fix this, they choose not to!

I wrote the following letter to the CEO of GM.

George M. Hauser

December 3, 2022

Ms. Mary Barra

CEO General Motors

300 Renaissance Ctr.

Detroit, Mi 48265

Dear Madam,

Some quick facts for your consideration:

I have never owned an automobile that was not made by General Motors (I am 80 years old).

The elimination of 2G service will end many key important services from my current cars that I have been paying for over many years. You know (or should know) what they are, so I won’t list them here.

The phone app you are providing to make up for this falls far far short.

When the same thing happened in Canada GM provided communication upgrades for It’s customers. So they know how to do this. GM should do the same for it’s U.S. customers.

If this communication upgrade is not provided or at least offered for a price, I will drop all Onstar services and will find a different manufacturer for all my future automobile purchases.

You can be sure there are many thousands just like me (most much younger) who did not take the time to write you.

George M Hauser

Not even the courtesy of a reply in over a month. GM simply does not care at lick about customer loyalty. My next car will be a KIA.
