Onstar Module Needs Replaced
I have a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali that I had to take in for a dealer for them to tell me the OnStar Module needed replaced. My vehicle is over the 36,000 miles so they quoted me close to $750 to fix it. This $80k truck is only a year and a half old! Mileage should have nothing to do with this part. How is this not something that is covered by GM and/or OnStar? Especially after reading about so many other brand new trucks having this issue.

Two weeks ago I got Terrain 2026, one week into driving the vehicle I started to have “Emergency calling” error messages. GPS, NAV, myGMC App and onStar, all stopped working. Took it to the dealership they tried to reprogram , it failed. They said the Telematics module needs replacement. This is just one week driving the Terrain. So don’t be surprised.

I have a 2023 Chevy trailblazer RS. Onstar stopped working back in November 2024. Told me my car was not getting the signal they were sending. I had to talk to them on cell phone because the microphone was not working in the car. Dealership ran a diagnostic test 2 different ones because Bluetooth was not working. The dealership said it was the Onstar module needed replaced. ($800) GM would pay half if I brought it back in so many days to replace it. Brought up the same thing mileage I was over my 36000 miles. Come to find out the dealership I bought the car from did not give me my extended warranty nor my GAP insurance which I always purchase GAP Insurance. My vehicle docs were on a flash drive so I did not notice the shot they pulled. I have a 2016 GMC Canyon and as of today I have not had an ONSTAR problem nor anything with Bluetooth connection. I had a 2008 Chevy Colorado no problem like this. A 2006 Malibu Max it had a problem with electric seat not wanting to operate.
Come on ONSTAR!!! What happens to safety if the module goes out during an emergency???? FIX THIS ISSUE OR REMOVE IT FROM THE VEHICLE!!!!!😡- mscardona1Contributor II
There’s talk of class action but no one has really organized with a lawyer yet. I’m thinking state attorney generals for each state affected but it seems like this is a Nationwide issue. While I’m unfamiliar in this field of law I wouldn’t know where to begin. My 22 Buick is out of warranty and this repair isn’t covered at all. ONSTAR will try to reach out to have a private conversation but it is a waste of time. Remember, ONSTAR is a product of GM and is in ALL GM VEHICLES. No way are they going to go against their parent company.
GM needs to issue a NATIONWIDE RECALL. Some cars are shutting down completely, some are drivable but lack some of the safety features because the faulty module is malfunctioning the safety system causing alerts, service engine lights, and drainage of the battery mid drive. This is a dangerous and hazardous condition to drive under if driving is mandatory, like it is for me. They say “you’re fine” to drive like this but there is a potential for bodily injury if the car breaks down mid drive on a highway with no warning. Someone is going to die or get seriously injured… is that when GM is going to do something about this? They have no problem paying billions out in settlements for wrongful deaths rather than fix the issue to secure lives. This is NEGLIGENCE. It needs to end. - Advisor_JackModerator

Friday Aug 1 my 2023 Sierra Denali had no supercruise. Shortly after I discovered that no Onstar. Took it to the dealer, and told it was the onstar module. I am covered under an extended warranty. Telling me the part should be here today (Aug 4) but I am seeing folks who have had to wait months. Are they now available and shipping? Hoping all the features that are now inop will be back up again later today or tomorrow. Thankful for the warranty. Wondering if I should buy one for my wife's Caddy we just got? The dealership turned me off the way they presented the warranty on that one.

So I must know, did everyone start having these issues with the Telematic Control Module/Onstar Module shortly after getting your vehicle back from the service department?

Pretty much. You'll find several mentions of that amongst the complaints here. A software update killed it. Given that it killed so many, it's likely the update that did it and not the mechanic doing the update - unless the instructions they were following were defective.

Well I took my truck in to have the Evap purge canister replaced, they took multiple days to do a 1hr job. Then when I get my truck back all of a sudden my trucks WiFi/Onstar doesn’t work. And I noticed that my glove box no longer worked properly, which told me they had to have taken it apart, and right behind the glove box is where the Telematic Control Module is which controls all of that. They had no reason to be messing with any thing inside my dash.

Same issue. I have a 2022 Sierra 2500 AT4. 6 months over the 3 years, but 5500 miles under the 36K. OnStar wont connect at all. No lights (Red or Green). Dealer wants almost $800 to diagnose and replace the unit. Unacceptable. What's up OnStar, any plans to rectify this? Seems to be a lot of newer vehicles with this issue....

I’m having the same issue with my phone 2022 GMC sierra - over the mileage and under 3 years ownership. What a sorry way to deal with customers that spend $80k on a truck.

After doing more research, I found out GM as well as other car manufacturers, are experiencing chip shortages. The sole distributor for GM is a company called SPECMO. When I asked them for an ETA on these modules, I was told mid to late July. While that remains to be seen if that ETA is accurate, at least it is a time frame. I also asked if these modules are repairable and the answer was GM only replaces these modules with new ones.

I have a 2022 GMC under 50k miles and 2 years old, I have been having issues while driving like vibration on the steering wheel, no wifi. Took it to the dealership to fix it and it took them 1 week to get it diagnosed, and they never called me to let me know about the situation or diagnosis I always had to call them. Last Saturday the service advisor told me it's almost done and will be ready by today or on Monday. When I called yesterday the advisor told me it's almost done and it shouldn't take any longer than Tuesday. I spoke with the manager because there was no point in speaking with the advisor since I don't think he has no idea what's going on. The manager told me I need to replace the Onstar module and it's been back ordered and he has no idea when it will be delivered. When I told him about the situation he was bit rude saying I can't do anything it might take a week a month or over an year. Unacceptable, I asked to talk to his manager and he told me you can't he is in a meeting right now and he'll call back and I was pretty sure he is not gonna do it so I asked for his manager's email, then he said let me transfer you. So I spoke to the Service Director, really good guy explained everything talked with the team with on giving wrong information but he told be there nothing more than he can do because it's the manufacturer's responsibility to make products and ship them on time but unfortunately it's been back ordered and it could take about a month it get it but once delivered they can fix it in a day. Onstar have to deal with the back ordered issue, imagine buying a 75,000 dollar truck and having issues and they can't fix it on time. Totally unacceptable.
