OnStar Broke My Radio!
Our 2020 GMC Terrain SLT is a good and reliable car. We bought it in 2022 from Enterprise Used Cars, our fourth or fifth car from them. I think it had around 40K on it. It has 83K now.
About twoweeks ago, I decided to sign up for OnStar. Within a week my Infotainment center became only a Bluetooth amplifier and speaker. Beyond sound from OnStar or any connected Bluetooth device, I get no sound.
I asked Microsoft Copilot about this. Here is where I learned that there have been gallons of ink and a googolplex of data on this. I followed the recommended instructions. My audio functions returned. Then I reconnected OnStar. They left again.
I read here that not many days hence, my infotainment center will be "bricked". I am on a three-month trial with OnStar. If it breaks a functional component in the vehicle, why keep and pay for it?
I like the conveniences of OnStar, but if it crashes one system, is it a stretch to fear it will crash other systems more critical to mechanical function and physical safety? I don't want to die to be able to enter a pre-cooled car on a sizzling hot day.
