Can't connect my OnStar

My wife and I purchased a used 2015 GMC Acadia and when I tried to connect with onstar I was told the onstar on my vehicle is out dated and I need to replace the unit. This is ridiculous I looked on line to see what it will cost we are looking at about 1500 Dollars what can we do about it.
